The Terauchi File Retrieval Kit (TFRK) is a purpose-built system developed by Dr. Yoshi Terauchi for the retrieval of broken or separated endodontic files from root canals. Designed for precision and control, the TFRK kit provides clinicians with a reliable method for managing one of the most challenging complications in endodontic treatment.
This is the latest version of the TFRK system, refined and updated by Dr. Terauchi to improve handling, efficiency, and predictability during broken file removal procedures.
How the Terauchi File Retrieval System Works
The Terauchi file removal kit is designed to allow controlled dentin removal around a separated instrument, followed by careful engagement and retrieval of the fragment. The system supports minimally invasive access while maintaining visibility and tactile feedback throughout the procedure.
The TFRK is commonly used in combination with magnification and ultrasonic techniques and is suitable for a wide range of clinical scenarios involving fractured files in curved or narrow canals.
Key Instruments Included in the TFRK Kit
The Terauchi broken file retrieval kit includes specialized instruments designed to work together during the retrieval process. Each component is engineered for precise control within the canal.
TFRK-GPR Gutta-Percha Removal Hand Instrument - stainless steel, 4% taper, pre-curvable, delta cones on both ends, maximum diameter 0.35 mm, for removal of filling remnants, necrotic pulp tissue and debris in narrow spaces.
TFRK-ME Micro-Explorer - stainless steel, double-ended, smooth-surfaced, 6% taper, 0.1 mm tip diameter; for bypassing ledged canals, exploring for broken files and reducing ledges.
TFRK-MT Micro-Trephine Bur - inner diameter 0.5 mm, outer diameter 0.8 mm, inner depth 1 mm; indicated when canal curvature is less than 15° and coronal diameter of the broken file is 0.45 mm. Operates at 600 rpm counterclockwise after canal enlargement.
Modified Gates Glidden Drill #3 - tip diameter 0.45 mm; used at 2500 rpm clockwise with brushing motion against the outer wall to create a funnel shape.
K-Endo rotary instrument K6 N60 2% L25 - martensitic-phase NiTi file at 37°C; used when coronal diameter of the broken file is greater than 0.45 mm or canal curvature is greater than 15°; operates at 500 rpm counterclockwise.
Broken file removal tips E87 / E88 / E89 - Katana V and Katana H create a 90° semicircular ditch on the inner wall of the broken file: pre-curvable for canal adaptation.
TFRK-S Straight (E87) - 0.1 mm tip diameter, 1% taper; for extending the groove to 180°, loosening and removing the broken file, creating space between canal wall and gutta-percha, and removing tissue or debris from thin spaces and isthmuses.
TFRK-L Loop (Yoshi Loop) - for retrieval of broken files after ultrasonic loosening, especially when the fragment is longer than 4.5 mm or not removed ultrasonically within 10 seconds; loop wire sizes 0.12 mm and 0.08 mm; microtube maximum diameter 0.5 mm, length 23 mm; replaceable cannula.
TFRK-P Brownie Polishing Point - silicone rubber-based instrument for sharpening ultrasonic tips and polishing.
